Boomerang4 Nonlinear Junction Detector
Transistors, diodes and integrated circuits all contain nonlinear diode junctions that create the actual semiconductor device. The BOOMERANG4 ™ Nonlinear Junction Detector will find these components used in surveillance transmitters (audio and video), hidden microphones, infrared and ultrasonic transmitters tape recorders and other covert eavesdropping devices hidden in walls, ceilings, bookcases, plants, furniture, etc., EVEN WHEN THEY’RE NOT TURNED ON!
The BOOMERANG4 is simple to use and extremely accurate. Its antenna is skimmed over the surface being swept. Most electronic circuits can be detected for several feet even through dense material.
How Boomerang4 ™ Works...
The BOOMERANG4 ™ transmits a low power microwave signal from its antenna. When the signal is received by a transistor, diode, or other semiconductor in a covert listening device or "bug", the semiconductor radiates or reflects radio frequency energy called harmonics.
The Boomerang’s supersensitive receiver detects this energy. The operator can quickly identify the presence of hidden electronic devices.
State of the Art Technique
Previous nonlinear junction detectors have had difficulty differentiating between semiconductors and dissimilar metals false returns caused by sheet rock screws, steel studs, paper clips, rebar, etc.
BOOMERANG4 ™ detects two different types of harmonic signals, displaying the difference between an actual bug and a false return caused by dissimilar metals.
Semiconductor components primarily radiate a frequency that is two times that of the signal from BOOMERANG4's transmitter. This signal is called the second harmonic. Upwards of 90% of the signal radiated by a semiconductor is second harmonic.
Dissimilar metals not used in semiconductors radiate a significant quantity of a signal that is three times that of the BOOMERANG4's transmitter. This is called the third harmonic.
The BOOMERANG4's antenna mounted display shows the level of both signals. The operator simply visually compares the levels of second and third harmonics on the LED bar graph meters to instantly determine whether a bug or a false return has been detected.
BOOMERANG4 ™ utilizes surface mount components and integrated circuits throughout. Its circuitry is designed to operate at low stress levels for longevity and ultrastable crystal controlled oscillators provide trouble-free operation without the need for factory calibration or periodic maintenance.
NJD-4 BOOMERANG4 ™ is an FCC type approved model available in a low power configuration (100 milliwatt). The NJD-4 is recommended for use by civilian groups within the United States.
NJD-5 BOOMERANG4 ™ is a high power unit, available to US federal government groups and for use outside of the United States. The NJD-5 has a 500 milliwatt transmitter for greater detection range especially in dense materials. The NJD-5 also has an integral multistep attenuator to allow the user to control the actual detection range by lowering the transmitter output.
An important note about transmitter power:
When comparing nonlinear junction detectors, the most critical component in the performance of a detector is the receiver sensitivity, not the power of the transmitter.
ISA's NJD-5s typically detect a standard test target in our laboratory for at least 16 feet (5.1 m). they do this with only 500 milliWatts of transmitter power. Field tests of other manufacturers' products indicate the NJD-5's detection range is 2-3 times greater. Competing products do not have as great a detection range, even though they have transmitters that have 3 to 6 times the power.
This fact means that the BOOMERANG4's receiver has a much greater sensitivity. This translates into more reliable operation, greater detection range and much longer operating time between battery charges.
